The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is an animated adventure comedy film produced by Nintendo in collaboration with Universal Pictures and Illumination, co-produced by Super Mario franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination co-founder Chris Meledandri. It was first announced on March 10, 2024 as a planned follow-up til the film's title was officially revealed in a teaser trailer during the September 2025 Nintendo Direct. The film premiered on March 28, 2026 at the Minami-za theater in Kyoto, Japan, and was released on April 1, 2026 in the United States, on April 24, 2026 in Japan, and on various other dates throughout April in other regions across the world. It is a direct sequel to the 2023 film The Super Mario Bros. Movie and is the fourth feature-length film in the Super Mario franchise overall. In the film, Mario, Luigi, Toad, Peach, and their new friend Yoshi wind up in space, and must stop Bowser Jr.'s nefarious plans to restore honor to the Bowser name by destroying the universe.

The film is mainly inspired by Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2^:5:16 and has been described by Miyamoto as the "main event" of the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary celebration.^:4:20 The first trailer for the film was broadcasted on a Nintendo Direct on November 12, 2025 at 9:00 ET, showcasing Rosalina and Bowser Jr.'s involvement. A brief extended clip from the trailer in form of a commercial was revealed at The Game Awards 2025. A second trailer was released in a dedicated Nintendo Direct on January 25, 2026 at 9:00 ET, showcasing Yoshi's appearance after being teased in the post-credits scene of the first film. A third Nintendo Direct featuring the film's final trailer premiered on March 9, 2026 at 17:00 ET, close to MAR10 Day and similarly to the first film and its release.

The film received mixed to negative reviews from critics, but like the first film, it became a major commercial success, currently ranking as the fifth highest-grossing film of 2026 and the second-highest grossing film based on a video game, only being beaten by its predecessor.

Plot

Rosalina defends the Lumas from Megaleg.

Rosalina explores the galaxy in her current home, the Comet Observatory, where she raises her family of Luma children as their mother. One day, as she is about to read them a bedtime story, the observatory is attacked by Megaleg, whose pilot intends to abduct her. She fights off and almost destroys Megaleg before a Luma exits the library, looking for Rosalina's comfort. Noticing this, Megaleg's pilot fires Bullet Bills at the library. Though she manages to neutralize them, Rosalina is ultimately captured, and Megaleg's pilot is then revealed to be Bowser Jr., the son of Bowser, who plans to restore the Bowser name with Kamek by his side. A Luma attempts to save Rosalina, only to be captured as well. The rest of the Lumas watch as both are taken away by Bowser Jr.'s UFO.

The Super Mario Bros. heroically arrive in Tostarena Town.

In the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario and Luigi are hailed as heroes for having previously defeated Bowser and saved both the kingdom—where they now live—and the city of Brooklyn. One day, they are called by the Tostarenans to investigate mysterious roaring inside the Inverted Pyramid near Tostarena Town. Using their Fire forms to light their way, the two stumble on a Warp Pipe blocked by rubble, which they start to remove before a roar is heard from within. In response, they attempt to block the pipe back up, but the creature who made the sound escapes. Before they can attack it, the creature cowers in fear. Realizing it is not a threat, Mario carefully lures it out, thus learning the cause of the problem was Yoshi. Mario asks how he ended up there, and Yoshi recounts the tale. Upon hatching from his egg in the sewers of Brooklyn, he found his way to the surface. He curiously explored the city, eventually running into trouble after accidentally collapsing a fossil at a dinosaur exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History. Pursued by security guards and police, Yoshi ultimately returned to the sewer and evaded capture by entering a Warp Pipe. With the question presumed unanswered due to a language barrier, the trio leaves the pyramid, and Yoshi is introduced to the Tostarenans. Not long after, he wanders off. Although the brothers initially assume he left them, Yoshi returns on Luigi's bike and rides it home with the two.

Meanwhile, Bowser Jr. takes Rosalina and the Luma, now in a cage together, to an unfinished planet surrounded by airships, where he celebrates the capture of his first princess, only to be cut short, however, when Rosalina breaks free upon one of the Koopas harming her Luma. In the ensuing struggle, the Luma flees to search for help from Princess Peach, while Rosalina is incapacitated by Bowser Jr.'s paintbrush by his magic paint as Bowser Jr. announces his time to free his father from the Mushroom Kingdom.

Mario and Peach watch Star Bits fall together.

Sometime later, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi prepare to attend Peach's birthday party. Mario has a present for her, which leads Luigi and Yoshi to correctly assume Mario has feelings for her that he is too afraid to admit. At the party, Mario and Luigi introduce Yoshi to their friend Toad, who takes a dislike to Yoshi. While Luigi, Yoshi, and Toad enjoy the festivities, Mario visits Peach, who is sitting on her castle's roof. Peach reveals to Mario that not only does she not like birthdays, but that today is also not actually her birthday. Rather, it is the anniversary of the day the Toads found her, and she has wondered where she is from ever since. Mario gives Peach her present, a new parasol, to cheer her up. Soon after, Star Bits begin to fall from the sky before a comet crash-lands in the kingdom. Upon investigation, the comet turns out to be the Luma that fled from Bowser Jr. and his forces. Peach and Toad take the Luma into the castle, who desperately asks for Peach's help in rescuing Rosalina. The Toad council insists that she not go, but Mario defends her and tells them she will decide on her own terms. As they leave, Peach accepts the Luma's request; Toad packs their supplies before the Luma transforms into a Launch Star to send the two to the Gateway Galaxy.

Bowser Jr. prepares to fight.

The next day, the Toads find that Peach is gone and panic. To calm them down, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi agree to handle Peach's duties in her absence, which includes protecting the kingdom from danger and rehabilitating Bowser, who has been confined to a miniature castle inside Peach's own since being fed a Mini Mushroom and now spends his time painting and dealing with his anger issues. Luigi bonds with Bowser, while Mario continues to hate him for his past actions. After they check on him, Peach's Castle is targeted by Bowser Jr.'s UFO. Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi manage to evacuate all of the Toads from the building before it is lifted into outer space. Bowser Jr. then confronts the trio and demands that they release his father. Mario refuses, which causes Bowser Jr. to use his magic brush to transform into his Wonder form, starting a battle between them. During the fight, Kamek, piloting Megaleg, arrives to assist Bowser Jr. but is swallowed by Yoshi and trapped in an egg. Yoshi briefly tries to operate Megaleg before Bowser Jr. attacks him. Though Yoshi gets out of the way, he accidentally hits a button that sends Megaleg rocketing upward with Bowser Jr. and Kamek inside. The robot crashes into the UFO, getting destroyed on impact and causing the UFO to power down. The castle, still airborne, suddenly plummets, crash-landing in the fields of the Honeyhive Galaxy. Finding themselves marooned, Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Bowser make their way to a castle on the horizon. In the process, Bowser learns of the attack orchestrated by his son and reveals they've not seen each other in years.

Peach meets Wart.

At the Gateway Galaxy, Toad points out a missing sign depicting Rosalina; Peach partially recognizes her from her past. Their backpack of supplies is then stolen by the monkey Ukiki, who tricked them into thinking he was lost. Ukiki flees to a casino in the Minus World, where the owner, Wart, hints to Peach and Toad that he has information on Rosalina's whereabouts but is unwilling to provide it. After defeating Birdo, Clawgrip, Mouser, an army of Ninjis, and finally Wart himself, Peach grows larger with a Super Mushroom and forces him to talk; he reveals that Rosalina was taken to the Space Junk Galaxy. Peach then makes her exit. Toad retrieves his backpack from Ukiki and quickly follows behind. The two return to the surface and make their way to the Flight Deck with some guidance from a R.O.B. at the information booth. There, they hope to find a pilot to take them to Space Junk Galaxy. However, those they ask refuse to make the trip. When all hope seems lost, the two suddenly encounter Fox McCloud, the leader of Star Fox and a pilot from another universe, who is revealed to have ended up in theirs when his warp drive exploded. Peach and Toad proceed to enlist his services, and Fox preps his Arwing for departure.

Back in the Honeyhive Galaxy, Bowser attempts to convince Mario that he has reformed. With some help from Luigi (who is more receptive), he asks Mario if he can be returned to normal size, concerned Bowser Jr. won't respect him otherwise. Mario reaffirms to Bowser that his son still loves him, but refuses to return him to his normal size. In response, Bowser insults him, prompting Mario to throw Bowser to the ground and stomp him in rage, which undoes the mushroom's effects. Upon returning to his normal size, Bowser keeps his word about having reformed, much to Mario's surprise. The four go to see the Honey Queen to ask if they can be taken to the Gateway Galaxy, but she identifies them as the intruders who destroyed her flower garden and orders them imprisoned. Bowser sacrifices his liberty by insisting that he pay for their crimes, offering to use his strength to work as a slave. The Honey Queen accepts; Mario forgives and thanks Bowser before he, Luigi, and Yoshi are sent to the Gateway Galaxy on a Mandibug. While serving his sentence, Bowser is abducted by the UFO. Onboard, he reunites with Bowser Jr. and is impressed by his progress as his son reveals that he built Planet Bowser, a place inspired by a bedtime story Bowser told to Jr. in which the Koopas achieved everything they desired while using Rosalina's power to fuel a planet-destroying energy cannon called the Boomsday Weapon. Kamek then alerts the Bowsers to Wart calling them about Peach and Toad.

Yoshi, Toad, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi encounter a T. Rex.

The brothers and Yoshi reunite with that pair and inform them of Rosalina's whereabouts. In turn, Peach and Toad introduce the trio to Fox, who takes a swift liking to Mario. Fox offers to take them to the Space Junk Galaxy via his Arwing. On their way, they are attacked by Bowser Jr., who turns Mario and Luigi into babies with a Super Scope and sends the Arwing crashing into Fossil Falls. Bowser feels guilty for double-crossing the brothers, but Jr. convinces him that they have softened him and made him lose his way; Bowser decides to return to his role as the King of the Koopas. In Fossil Falls, Fox struggles to repair the Arwing while Baby Mario and Baby Luigi wander off and find a sleeping Tyrannosaurus Rex. While Yoshi retrieves Bowser Jr.'s Super Scope from a tree branch, Toad tries to keep the babies from waking the T. Rex. Yoshi accidentally wakes it after retrieving the Super Scope, prompting the group to flee on Yoshi's back while the dinosaur pursues them. During the chase, Toad is also turned into a baby. Yoshi loses the T. Rex when it falls off a fragile fossil bridge into a pool of water. As the dinosaur emerges from the water, the babies use the Super Scope to turn it into a baby; Yoshi then uses it to revert Mario, Luigi, and Toad to their adult selves. While Fox continues to repair the Arwing, Mario comforts a frustrated Peach. Luigi playfully tests a radio, and the broadcast is intercepted by the Lumas in the Comet Observatory library. In short order, the Lumas arrive in Fossil Falls and take everyone to the Space Junk Galaxy.

On the way, Peach explores the library and finds a storybook about her, in which she discovers her origins. Long ago, Rosalina and Peach were sisters made from stardust and born on a lifeless planet, with Rosalina being the older one. Despite their surroundings, they played together, eventually learning they had the power to create life so long as their palms touched. One day, the two were assailed by an unknown threat wanting to use this power for itself. To keep Peach safe from danger, Rosalina reluctantly sent her through a Warp Pipe she found in a cave while she fended off the enemy. Peach ended up in the Mushroom Kingdom, where she was found by the Toads who adopted her and, upon reaching adulthood, became their princess. Due to her young age at the time of her separation from Rosalina, Peach had no memory of these events.

Dry Bowser and Wonder Bowser Jr. prepare to fight Mario and Peach.

In the Space Junk Galaxy, Fox pilots the observatory through the airship armada while Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi are dispatched onto Planet Bowser, where they intend to sneak in and rescue Rosalina. The team splits up afterwards, with Luigi and Yoshi finding Koopas loading power-ups, while Mario and Peach fall into a trap, encountering obstacles such as Fire Bars, Grinders, Thwomps, and Spike Traps as part of the planet's security system. Mario and Peach escape by using Peach's parasol to boost themselves up over a wall of Thwomps, propelled by a Bob-omb group explosion. Unwilling to let the heroes ruin his son's creation, Bowser confronts Mario and Peach on a bridge suspended over a lava moat. Mario uses one of Bowser's axes to sever the bridge, dropping Bowser into the lava below. Bowser Jr. is distraught upon seeing his father's fate, about which Mario and Peach feel regret. However, Bowser survives and re-emerges from the lava as Dry Bowser. Mario sends Peach to rescue Rosalina, while Luigi and Yoshi assist the former in fighting the Bowsers. Bowser Jr. wields his magic brush, and the heroes use power-ups to transform into Drill Mario, Cloud Luigi, and Blimp Yoshi. During the fight, as the Mario Bros. lose their power-ups, Blimp Yoshi manages to disarm Bowser Jr. Luigi picks up the brush, using it to paint Mr. Game & Watch, who defeats Dry Bowser by hitting him in the head with a hammer. Bowser Jr., enraged by his father's demise, recovers his brush from Luigi by throwing Dry Bowser's shell at him, defeating Game & Watch in the process. He then creates a replica of the Ruined Dragon, only for it to unexpectedly swallow him whole. Mario uses a Red Star to transform into Flying Mario and defeat the Ruined Dragon to save Bowser Jr. Meanwhile, Peach locates Rosalina in the core of the Boomsday Weapon, who is slowly dying as her energy is being drained. Recalling the story she read, Peach calls out to Rosalina, encouraging her to try touching Peach's palm. At the last moment, Rosalina succeeds, and together, the sisters destroy the weapon and terraform Planet Bowser.

Peach's Castle rebuilt.

The Lumas reunite with Rosalina and request to visit Peach's Castle, to Mario and Luigi's dread. Seeing a crater where the castle once stood, a Luma asks what happened to it. Luigi nervously replies that it "died", and Mario changes the subject, saying that everyone will work together to rebuild it. Upon its completion, emboldened by a kiss from Peach, he uses a Cape Feather to transform into Cape Mario and plant a flag atop the highest tower.

In a mid-credits scene, Fox drops the Bowsers off at a far-off prison before returning home in his fully-repaired Arwing, thanks to Rosalina. The Bowsers attempt to make their escape by digging a hole through their cell, only to be caught by Lumalee, who, as their prison guard, torments them with nihilistic threats. In a post-credits scene, Ukiki robs a Whittle at the Gateway Galaxy, but he gets punched away by a gloved fist. The grateful Whittle's belongings are then returned to it by Princess Daisy.

Name	Description
Mario	A heroic Italian-American plumber from Brooklyn. After the events of the first movie, he and his brother Luigi have taken up residence in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Luigi	Mario's taller twin brother, who has a more timid personality. Charlie Day describes Luigi as having a "big heart" and "[seeing] the best in people", most notably Bowser.
Princess Peach	The kind, strong-willed princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, as well as a love interest of Bowser. She is revealed later in the film to be Rosalina's long-lost, younger sister.
Bowser	The king of the Koopas and the archnemesis of the Mario brothers. Following his defeat and subsequent shrinking, he resides in a miniature model fashioned after his castle. Jack Black describes Bowser as being self-reflective since the events of the previous film and "finding a tender side inside of himself", while still having "a little bubbling rage underneath". According to Black, Bowser has an estranged relationship with his son, Bowser Jr.
Toad	A brave, chipper Toad who resides in the Mushroom Kingdom, much like the rest of his species. He is commonly depicted in explorer's attire based on that of Captain Toad, whom external media refers to him as. Keegan-Michael Key mentions Toad as showing "different sides of [himself]" beyond loyalty to Peach in the film, including jealousy.
Bowser Jr. (new)	Bowser's son, who aims to rescue his father. He wields a magic brush which he uses as a weapon. Benny Safdie describes Bowser Jr. as "a kid trying to prove himself [and] trying to find his dad and live up to something bigger than him" despite his villainy.
Kamek	A sorcerer who serves as Bowser's sycophantic right-hand man.
Rosalina (new)	A mysterious princess from outer space and the caretaker of the Lumas who first appeared in the Super Mario franchise in Super Mario Galaxy. She is kidnapped by Bowser Jr., and is revealed later in the film to be Peach's long-lost, older sister.
Yoshi (new)	A green dinosaur Mario and Luigi find in the Inverted Pyramid, who accompanies them on their journey to space. In the video games, he has appeared as a companion to Mario and Luigi numerous times since his introduction in Super Mario World; he was originally found by the brothers on an island, not in a desert.
